- Matilde Serri Pini ¿Águila o Sol? confronts the Mexican coin-toss phrase as a territorial condition, an unstable balance between natural and artificial, planned and spontaneous, shaping settlement along Toluca's urban fringe. At 2,600 meters on the Nevado de Toluca's slopes, fields, reservoirs, and expanding settlements coexist in mounting tension, driven largely by autoconstrucción — self-built architecture forming most of Mexico's housing stock, a complex adaptive system rather than informality. Water, diffuse and non-proprietary, threads city and countryside together. A 1,200-meter proposal links a peripheral road north of Santiago Tlacotepec to a diagonal street south of Toluca: a repeated portico module grafted onto existing irrigation ditches, branching into a market, chapel, Lienzo Charro, grain warehouse, seed bank, and rainwater cistern. .
